Relativization in Korean ko Constructions: A Topological Solution
نویسنده
چکیده
Using a linearization formalism in the framework of dependency grammars, this article proposes a simple analysis of new data on word order constraints in Korean ko construction composed of three verbs V3-ko V2 V1. It will be shown that V3-ko rejoins the verb cluster in the case of extraction of its nominal dependent, while V3-ko forms an independent constituent with its dependent in the case where extraction does not take place. We show that island constraints can take place indirectly at the level of topological (constituent) structure, contrary to classic descriptions of extraction put forth by Ross (1967) or Kaplan &

Double Subject, Double Nominative Object and Double Accusative Object Constructions in Japanese and Korean
This paper presents a unified account of three kinds of constructions in which more than one NP can show up with the same case in simple sentences in Japanese and Korean: double subject, double nominative object and double accusative constructions. Noting that the second NPs in these constructions are functional or relational, this paper proposes to assign them the category and type different f...

The overarching goal of this article is to account for why the Internally-Headed Relative Clause, the direct perception, and the factive constructions in Korean have an identical form involving the pronominal kes and the relativizer -un, despite the fact that one construction instantiates relativization and the other two instantiate complementation. I solve this puzzle by recasting Kim’s (2007)...
متن کاملTense Markers and -ko Constructions in Korean
There have been heated debates on whether tense markers in Korean are inflectional affixes or syntactic words. One of the strongest pieces of evidence for the latter position comes from tense-related phenomena in -ko constructions. These constructions are usually assumed to consist of two coordinate clauses. In this paper, we will see that the tense phenomena can be accounted for naturally by c...

متن کاملTenseless constructions in a tensed language: temporal interpretation of the Korean -ko construction
1. Introduction This paper investigates the nature of the syntax-semantics interface through a study of the temporal interpretation of the Korean-ko construction. In Korean, matrix clauses must be tensed whereas the non-final conjunct of the-ko construction can be untensed. For example, (1) must be realized either with present (PRES) or past (PAST) tense morpheme whereas the past tense on the v...
